ELIZABETH JAMES
Elizabeth Ann James is a dynamic and accomplished individual, holding a Bachelor's degree in Chemistry with minors in Biology and Mathematics from Xavier University of Louisiana. Currently pursuing a Master's of Health Science at Meharry Medical College, Elizabeth maintains a stellar 4.0 grade point average.
With a background as a Laboratory Technician at the United States Department of Agriculture, specializing in Carbohydrate Chemistry, Elizabeth has made significant contributions to scientific research. She also served as the United States Ambassador of Scribe America, leading implementation projects in hospitals nationwide. Notably, in 2022, Elizabeth was part of a groundbreaking team of Scientists whose publication on a novel drug binding mechanism to Estrogen Receptor Positive Breast Cancer Cells made a profound impact on Breast Cancer Research.
Beyond her academic achievements, Elizabeth is a dedicated advocate for health and education reform in underrepresented communities. Inspired by her father's passion for education, she has tutored underprivileged students across the United States and Canada for over a decade, helping them excel in standardized testing, Math, Science, and Spanish.
Elizabeth's talents extend beyond academia and advocacy. She has graced the runways of Paris and New York Fashion Weeks and has been featured in esteemed publications such as Elle, Harper’s Bazaar, and Marie Claire Italia. In her leisure time, she enjoys volunteering, hiking, learning new languages, and exploring different cultures around the world.
Raised by a single father from the age of six months due to her mother's struggles with schizophrenia, Elizabeth is also a survivor of sexual assault. These experiences have fueled her passion for destigmatizing mental illness and empowering survivors within the black and brown communities.
During her time as Miss Sophomore at Xavier University of Louisiana, Elizabeth initiated mental health circles and organized the annual event "My Story Matters," addressing depression and suicide within the black community. She also mentored younger women on campus and founded ImPowHER Detroit, a nonprofit that hosts monthly virtual sister circles providing a safe space for women to connect and support each other.
In addition to her numerous accomplishments, Elizabeth proudly holds the title of Miss Black Michigan USA, representing the state with grace, dignity, and a commitment to positive change. Her remarkable journey is a testament to resilience and determination, inspiring others to overcome adversity and pursue their dreams.
